ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the transition period on hematological and biochemical constituents in Mangalarga Marchador mares. Forty-eight mares were used to form a maintenance group (MG) and transition group (TG), formed by pregnant mares and, after delivery, infants. Blood samples were collected at the following times: T-60 (60 d pre-delivery), T-30 (30 d pre-delivery), T-15 (15 d pre-delivery), T0 (first 6h post-delivery), T15 (15 d post-delivery), T30 (30 d post-delivery), and T60 (60 d post-delivery). The TG had lower values (P< 0.05) of red blood cells, hematocrit and hemoglobin at T0, T15, T30 and T60 times than MG. The mean corpuscular volume was lower in MG (P< 0.05) than in TG (T0, T15, T30 and T60) and mean... |

Erythrocyte and leukocyte parameters and total protein (TP) of Brasileiro de Hipismo (BH) and Breton mares were studied during pregnancy. A total of 175 healthy mares, varying from 3 to 13 years old were used. Among the animals, 89 were BH mares (14 non pregnant and 75 pregnant) and 86 Breton mares (11 non pregnant and 75 pregnant). The mares were divided into four groups for each breed: control group (non pregnant mares). group 1 (first period of pregnancy, 25-110 days, n=25), group 2 (second period of pregnancy, 111-210 days, n=25) and group 3 (third period of pregnancy, 211-340 days, n=25). The values for erythrocyte, leukocyte were compared with the obtained total protein. Red blood cells count (RBC), packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin... |

The morphological characteristics of the hooves of two groups of horses were studied. The first group was comprised of six adult animals without any treatment and served as the control. The other group, comprised of seven horses, received carbohydrates overload orally. Of these, 71% developed laminitis between 36 and 48 hours after carbohydrate administration. After 48 hours of induction, the animals were sacrificed and their fore limbs and hindlimbs were removed for histologic study. Tissue sections 5 to 7 µm thick were obtained, stained with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) or periodic acid Schiff's (PAS), and then examined by light microscopy. It was possible to identify in horses from the laminitis group, morphological and structural changes in the... |

The hypoosmotic test (HO) was used to evaluate plasmatic membrane integrity of equine chilled semen and to estimate the correlation between the results of the HO test and those from applied routine exams of semen. The semen of seven stallions was preserved at 5ºC in three different extenders. Each ejaculate was diluted in three extenders, Kenney (K), Baken with 3% of egg yolk (B3) and Baken with 10% of egg yolk (B10), and chilled at 5ºC. The total motility (MT), progressive motility (MP), spermatic vigor (V), normal spermatic morphology (NOR) and HO test were used to evaluate semen immediately after collection and at 24 hour-intervals. Spermatic longevity was defined as the time taken to the progressive motility to decline under 10%. Semen diluted in B3... |

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is a membrane transporter encoded in the Multi-drug Resistance (MDR1) gene expressed in several normal tissues and over expressed in tumor cells. P-gp was already identified in different species but not yet in equine. MDR1 gene and P-gp are able to interfere with bioavailability and disposition of several drugs, altering pharmacokinetic and pharmacodinamic of drugs. The presence of the MDR1 and P-gp in the central nervous system blocks the entry of certain drugs in this tissue and reduces drug absorption and enhances drug elimination when P-gp and MDR1 are presented in the gastrointestinal tract. This study showed that the MDR1 gene is present in equine ileum. Future studies on the impact of the P-glycoprotein encoded gene MDR1 on... |

The influence of acepromazine (ACP) on the effectiveness of dobutamine (DBT) in increasing blood pressure during isoflurane (ISO) anesthesia was evaluated in six horses. On separate occasions, the horses were randomly assigned to receive NaCl 0.9% (Control), ACP 0.025mg kg-1 and ACP 0.05mg kg-1. The experimental treatment was administered prior to induction of anesthesia. Maintenance of anesthesia was performed under conditions of normocapnia with ISO in oxygen. Dobutamine was administered at progressively increasing infusion rates until mean arterial pressure (MAP) reached 70mmHg or until a maximum infusion rate of 5.0µg kg-1 min-1. Compared with baseline, DBT increased heart rate, systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressures in all treatments. However,... |

The effect of intratendineous injections of polysulphated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) as treatment of collagenase-induced tendonitis was studied. Two groups (GI and GII) of five Arabian horses each, males and females, two to six year-old, were submitted to experimental tendinitis of the superficial digital flexor tendon of the left thoracic limb by intratendineous injection of 1.0ml of collagenase (2.5mg/ml). Seven days after the induced-lesions were created, the horses of GI received five intralesional injections of 1.0ml (125mg) of PSGAG, every four days. Horses of GII received injections of saline in the same dose and rate. Clinical and ultrasonographic evaluations were performed periodically, during 150 days. All animals showed lameness, increased local... |

Athletic production is what is sought from the horse. As mammary development is important to the dairy cow, skeletal development is important to horses meeting their production goals. As any integrative physiologist will appreciate, the variables that come together to result in optimal skeletal development are complex. Nutrition is one of these, and it contains two broad variables; the supply of dietary nutrients and energy. This presentation will focus on dietary energy and its links with skeletal development. I propose that it is not simply the amount of dietary energy, but the way and from that that energy is supplied that impacts skeletal development. Through an understanding of how dietary energy impact skeletal development, more precise feeding... |

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of the upper lip twitch restraint on intraocular pressure (IOP) of healthy horses. In this study, forty five Criollo horses, aged between two to 20 years (male or female) were evaluated with rebound tonometer, with and without upper lip twitch restraint. A previous ophthalmic examination was performed with Schirmer tear test, fluorescein test, slit lamp biomicroscopy and direct ophthalmoscopy in all horses. Only healthy animals with no ocular findings were used. The order of the IOP measurements (with or without twitch) and order of the eye (right or left) were randomized. Three measurements of each eye were made and the mean was calculated. Head position was kept above the heart level and no... |

ABSTRACT Mammary disorders in mares are rare and usually only one animal per paddock is affected. In this report, two mares with 7 and 9 years old, were concomitantly diagnosis of chronic pyogranulomatous mastitis, associated with the Splendore-Hoeppli reaction, indicative of botryomycosis a rare, chronic suppurative disease with microabscess formation, characterized by in vivo formation of eosinophilic materials around microorganisms or biologically inert material. Various bacteria can cause botryomycosis in horses, and the most frequently isolated one is Staphylococcus sp., particularly S. aureus. This report confirms the role of Staphylococcus sp.; however, specifically S. hyicus and S. cohnii that prior to the current report, had not been associated... |

A 17-year-old, gray Thoroughbred gelding was presented with recurrent epistaxis following exercise for over one year. Multidetector-row computed tomographic (MDCT) examination of the head performed under general anesthesia indicated the presence of malignant melanoma. MDCT examination revealed the exact location and size of masses in the right guttural pouch first identified by endoscopy and in the left guttural pouch unidentified by endoscopy. MDCT examination revealed the presence of a blood clot that filled the right maxillary sinus. The horse was euthanized due to poor prognosis as a riding horse and the owner's decision, and MDCT findings were confirmed by postmortem examination. MDCT is suggested as a useful technique for diagnosis of head problems... |

This study was designed to investigate gastrointestinal dysfunctions, especially the effects of gastrointestinal prokinetic agents on digestive disorders involving lowered motility. The effects of α2-adrenergic agonists for treating acute abdominal disorders involving intestinal torsion in horses were also investigated. The results are as follows: (1) It appeared that the functions of migrating contractions (MC) in horses were to transfer the contents of the digestive tract as soon as possible to the cecum and colon, in addition to maintaining homeostatis in the digestive tract. (2) Motilin was seen to be involved in the regulation mechanism of intestinal motility in the horse as well as in humans and dogs, and brought about MC. (3) The intravenous... |
